Wireless Thermostats:

The Trane Programmable Thermostat

Trane Programmable Thermostat

Trane is a High Tech Heating and Air Conditioning manufacturer that draws on the huge resources of the mother company, Ingersoll Rand. They are known for their air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, clean air systems, and deluxe programmable thermostats. Their trademark means low maintenance, quiet operation, energy star compliant components, and “space age” features.

They bring very sophisticated solutions to today’s heating and cooling problems. Their latest awesome entry is in the area of programmable thermostats – the Trane programmable thermostat: model ComfortLink(tm) II. It is truly one of the most innovative products in the heating and air conditioning market today.

Imagine…

Imagine if you will… a thermostat that alerts your to impending weather emergencies, straight from the national weather service.

Also, imagine a wireless thermostat that allows you to adjust the downstairs air from the upstairs thermostat. Or, go even further. Set this remote control thermostat from a computer in your home, or one at work, or even from your hotel room all the way across the world, via the internet.

Imagine adjusting the temperature differently for each room of you home. Remotely! This feature is available using most web-enabled cell phones.

Imagine a high definition display (kind of like a small tablet computer) that lets you control different heating and cooling zones throughout your home.

Imagine an internet-enabled programmable digital thermostat that also allows you to keep a history of heating and cooling runtime costs so you can adjust the system on the fly. This helps you optimize your living space comfort requirements while lowering your energy bill.

Trane Programmable Thermostat – We have the technology!

Well, imagine no more! The Trane ComfortLink(tm) II programmable thermostat is here and it does all those things.

Vacation coming up? Are you dreading tinkering with the thermostat programming and then changing it back? Not to worry! The Trane programmable thermostat is different from other thermostats. With the Trane ComfortLink(tm) system you can have a vacation “set of program variables” that override the every day ones. When you are due to be back, it automatically reverts back to the regular daily schedule.

Are you tired of seeing that obnoxious thermostat box on the wall? The trane ComfortLink(tm) II has a screen saver. You can use it as a digital picture frame, using slideshow mode! Nice!

Since the Trane programmable thermostat (ComfortLink(tm) II) is wireless enabled, it can even be streamed to select digital TV sets. Applications are being developed for that purpose as this is being written. So, lets say you are relaxing on the couch, watching the current release of the latest “Narnia” movie on Blu-Ray(tm). You get a chill. You pick up your remote, select “thermostat” and adjust the temperature up. Science Fiction? No. Science Fact.

This short video shows the Trane programmable thermostat in action.

Heating and Air Conditioning Systems: Take Control

In the area of home heating and air conditioning systems we are committed to helping you take control of your home environment to increase the comfort and health of your family at the lowest initial cost and long term maintenance cost. The heating and AC system consists of many parts like compressor, condenser, thermostat, duct, blower, furnace, filters, etc. It is just not practical for the average home owner to install and maintain their own system. There are, however some simple tasks that the home owner can perform on their own, like cleaning and replacing air filters, that will prolong the life of heating and air conditioning systems.

Tune-Up

One thing that is very popular today is a Heating and AC Tune-Up. An inexpensive Tune-Up of your heating and air conditioning system can increase its efficiency of and save you money on your monthly utility bill. Installation of a new programmable digital thermostat can also increase your savings. Because a tune-up can spot problems early, you can make adjustments or replacements early before any major damage is done which lowers the total cost of ownership of your system over time.

EnergyStar

If you require a new AC unit, your friendly TNS Mechanical technician can help you get the best value. They can recommend an energy efficient system with high EER that will cool your building (home) for the lowest cost per cubic foot. These energy star rated systems are the most efficient and highest performance units you can buy. You will notice a marked difference on your utility bill.

Home Energy Audits

Are energy audits a waste of time? Are they inconvenient and a lot of work? Some feel that energy audits are just a lot of hype. Nothing could be further from the truth! Energy audits can save your REAL MONEY! You can save anywhere from 5% to 30% on you energy bills each and every month. That’s a lot of money.

Home Energy Audits, Arlington

Benefits of Home Energy Audits

The major benefit of course is the cash savings that continue month after month. One, less obvious benefit of a full energy audit of your home or business, is that the cooling and heating of your space will be more even and consistent, which translates to a more comfortable living space. An additional benefit is knowing that you are doing your part to conserve energy on a global scale as well as just your own.

Home Energy Audits: The Home Energy Assessment

The focus of this article is on home energy assessment and remedies. You have many options. You can do it all yourself. You can have a professional auditor perform the testing and assessment then you do can do all the “fix-up” yourself. Or, you can outsource all the work to the professionals. Only you fully know your capabilities and skills, so, we hope this article will help you to see, not only the major benefits of a home energy audit but how to proceed to enjoy those benefits.

Home Energy Audits: The “Do It Yourself” Assessment

Although we don’t recommend this approach, some people feel they do not have sufficient resources to pay for a full home energy audit. This is not a realistic scenario because the cost of a home energy audit is easily recovered from the savings on your energy bills. In fact, there is no way to accurately assess your home for air leakage or other losses other than using your eyes – looking for cracks, etc. The best you can hope for is to perform some preventative measures and hope for the best. So, you may spend too much in the fix-up of things that are OK, and miss some things that are essential. That being said, here is a “quick and dirty” list of things you can do:

  • Start by keeping a checklist of things you see. Go room to room and make notes first.
  • Look for cracks in the walls and around doors, windows, electric outlets, etc.
  • Go up in your attic and check the level and coverage of you insulation, and the integrity of the ventilation ducts.
  • See if your water heater, furnace and cooling equipment is up to date and energy efficient. You can have your HVAC do an in depth test of this. They can even some A/C and Heating system tune-ups done to increase the system efficiency.
  • Make sure the water heater’s temperature setting is not set too high. Adjusting the temperature downward can be a real energy saver.
  • If your budget allows, replace any ageing appliances with energy star rated units.

The next step, of course is to fill cracks, get equipment updated if necessary, and install more insulation if the current insulation has settled or does not have proper coverage.

Home Energy Audits: The Professional Energy Audit

This is the preferred way to get your home in shape for great energy savings. This type of audit goes far beyond using just your eyes. The technician uses high-tech equipment to “see” where the air leaks are. They use thermographic scanners to detect hot spots and cool spots in your walls (not enough insulation) or where the air is leaking around windows and doors, or even off insulated pipes. Special test like the “blower door test” or the measurement of  PFT air infiltration help to home in on really troublesome air leaks.

In my view, the advantage of getting a professional energy audit is that they are experts. They are experienced – they do audits every day. And, they are thorough. The average homeowner simply cannot do as good a job. This is a really specialized field requiring expensive equipment that the average home owner does not have. The cost is easily recovered by energy savings so there is not really a good reason to “do it yourself”.

Here is a video that describes the home energy audit process. This video was shot by the US Government and not an energy audit company. The government has a lot at stake in keeping our energy consumption low so that we all can enjoy lower bills and a better lifestyle.

Home Energy Audits: The Audit Is Only The First Step

Determining where your energy loss is the hard part. Fortunately, with high-tech devices we can locate these losses fairly easily. The most important step is the follow-through. Once the sources of loss are identified, we must take action to rectify these inadequacies. The remedy may be as simple as using a caulk gun to plug cracks, gaps around windows, doors, sockets, switches, light fixtures etc. It could require an A/C Tune-up, a furnace tune-up, replacing an inefficient water heater, etc. Whatever needs to be done should be accomplished as quickly as possible so you can begin to see savings.

Home Energy Audits: Tax Credits

In closing, we would like to mention that our government is so serious about the amount of energy we use that they have created the DOE – department of energy. The regularly issue rebates and tax credits to help urge us to make good energy choices. You local HVAC company will most likely keep up to date on these issues. The folks over at TNS Mechanical in Arlington, Texas are an excellent choice to help you with your home energy audits, and in fixing any issues that will make your home more energy efficient.
